Dr Mrinal, Dr Leela, the two nurses, and the young man who drove the van assembled in the reception area of the Western Ghats Diagnostic Centre.

“Kunal, you take the towing van to the crash site and push the car over the cliff near Silent Villa. Don’t be an idiot to drive it over the nail traps you have yourself placed on the road, else you will have to fix the flat tyre yourself,” Mrinal instructed.

The young man replied, “Okay father, as you say.”

Mrinal drank a glass of water. “I am going to the terrace to pull up the signboard at the back,” he said.

“Any work for the two of us, father?” the brown eyed nurse asked.

“You remove the ‘Casualty’ board from the back. And you…”, he said pointing at the pimple-pitted nurse “….call up Shaman Mehek and the others to tell them that we will have another ceremony shortly. This time it will be a triple!”

“As you say, father!”

“Have you informed the recipients?” asked Dr Leela.

“Of course, my dear wife. They will start coming in from tomorrow morning. We need to put up a board outside the diagnostic centre stating that we are closed till Monday for renovations,” said Mrinal.

“What about the abortions and ultrasounds scheduled by Vandana for the next few days?” Leela asked.

Vandana, the gynaecologist, was Leela’s cousin and worked at the diagnostic centre.

“What if we don’t comply with the appointments? Will they go to the police and complain that we did not comply with their appointment to terminate their future girl child?” Mrinal was furious.

He was the boss of this family of five; any difference of opinion with him was not permissible. “Don’t tell me what to do or I will bend over and slap your wrinkled, ugly face, sweetheart!”

The others in the room hoped the thunderstorm of rage would pass soon. Their father was someone with whom they could not disagree. Their lives had been altered living under his terror for so many years. Twice, the girls had failed to clear the medical entrance exam. One of them was interested in Accounting while the other loved History. Because they had let him down, their father forcefully enrolled them in Sharada College where the sisters befriended another student of the college named Mehek. She soon became their closest family friend. When Kunal failed to clear IIT and engineering entrance tests, even he had to face the wrath of his father. In an act of rage his father forcefully enrolled him in the Bachelor of Home Sciences course, a course generally undertaken only by women. Mrinal ensured that his son completed the course with distinction as well.

He was almost yelling now. “Did you people hear me properly? Did you? Now get to work. Leela! You tell Vandana to be here in the morning tomorrow; considering the amount of work we may need her help.”

After everyone left, Mrinal went to the terrace to pull down the sign board.

Later, he slept for a couple of hours. There were long hours to be spent at the operation theatre in the next two days.
